Welcome to the unofficial Donegal heritage page!

Co. Donegal is a magic place with special people, amazing scenery and a lot of very interesting history. This wiki site is an attempt to capture and record details of our heritage. Developments in the Project will be listed here. Please note... this site is a permanent "work in progress"! Many pages are constantly "under construction".

What is this project?

The Donegal Heritage wiki is a project that seeks to capture and document the combined knowledge of anybody who has an interest in the culture and heritage of Co. Donegal. The project takes place at the intersection of a number of seemingly unrelated elements. These are:

  • The rich and varied tapestry of natural, cultural and historical heritage in the county.
  • The need to document, preserve and publicise this heritage.
  • A large number of people who are well informed and enthusiastic about recording and preserving this heritage.
  • Developments in Information Technology; particularly the increasing access to the internet and the availability of easy to use wiki software.

Aim of the project.

This wiki aims to be the most comprehensive resource and metasite relating to the historical, cultural and natural heritage of the county.

It has been established as a public forum and "web-space" for anyone who wishes to contribute material of interest. There are many Co. Donegal websites (some of them are very good indeed, and are linked in to this site!), but this wiki is different. It is an open source project (only loosely edited and regulated) that will facilitate the publication of a wide variety of material that would not otherwise see the light of day. Every house in the county has a "glory box", photograph album or collection of "stuff" from previous generations. This "stuff" is of interest to a surprisingly large audience, and even items that may seem mundane, may enrich our knowledge of the county; it's history, culture and heritage. See an example of what can be done (not a Donegal page, but a good model to copy). Human memories can be frail and fleeting. This wiki can catch our combined memory for posterity. And there are important reasons for this. Heritage can be damaged, vandalised and Forgotten. It must be protected.

What is wiki?

A wiki (as defined by the Wikipedia) is a website that allows the visitors themselves to easily add, remove, and otherwise edit and change available content, typically without the need for registration. This ease of interaction and operation makes a wiki an effective tool for mass collaborative authoring.

In practical terms, this means that anyone with particular knowledge of any aspect of county heritage, can log on to this site and add their own contributions. In a short space of time, this wiki can become the ultimate source of collective knowledge of the county. It will become a repository of written, visual and audio content that will be invaluable to visitors, policy-makers, generations to come, students and researchers and anyone with an interest in Co. Donegal.

Looking for a pot of gold in Donegal? Better learn to swim! Seriously though, the "pot of gold" for this project is knowlege. Anyone who can contribute anything is invited to share their "stuff" with us. Contact: Donegalwiki@gmail.com

Principles of operation

There is no great list of rules for this project, but a short set of guiding principles are needed. These are:

  • Respect all users.
  • Respect copyright, "acceptable use" and "fair use" rules.
  • No Trolls.
  • Because a wiki is in the public domain, all sorts of information may appear here. The wiki master and moderators will keep an eye on content but we cannot be held liable for the consequences or effect of any information in this wiki. This is an absolute condition of use.
  • This is an open source project. Anything that is published here may well be "lifted" and used by anyone, contributers should be aware of this. The wiki can't guarantee where your contribution may end up.
